Keepin' it real
Here is a post dedicated to keeping it real...
Each month Brett and I sit down to discuss our "family budget"...You see I am the type A, OCD freak, actually like doing things like this person. I like crunching numbers...feeling like I know where every hard earned dollar goes...basically I am the nerd of the family. Brett is definitely the opposite (they attract I've heard...). Don't get me wrong, he is very financially responsible, but if he were in charge, every bill would be payed the day it is due, and the budget...."well...that's just no fun to have a budget". And to top it off...he wouldn't be the least bit stressed about it. He is just that laid back ...yes...I need more of that. Me...on the other hand...I panic if I don't have a bill payed 10 days before it is due....but that is just how we fit together. it works.
I digress...
So each month we have a tithe column and a giving column in our budget. We feel as a family that is something we are not only held responsible to do, but responsible to teach our kids to do.
Here's where it gets real.
Each month starts out with the "perfect" amount in each of the column's. That is the amount that makes us feel "like good Christians" and sleep really good on our comfy mattress. Some months that is exactly what happens with that money.
Some months not.
Sometimes, we have to withdrawal money from there to give to other places and things....of which all these others don't really matter in the end. At the time it makes perfect sense...after all we have this "extra money" that we don't owe anybody. And well...life happens...
Two days ago I was listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio in the car (remember i am the nerd) and he was talking about this organization called I Like Giving. He was telling "me" (yes...I do feel like he is talking directly to me sometimes) about a new video that Dave was super excited about...and just basically being super excited out this organization called I LIKE GIVING. Here it is in a nutshell.
This is a campaign for a generous world because we believe
a generous world is a better world for all of us. But we don’t want
your money, we want your action. Live generously
I came home and watched the video. it takes 6 minutes to watch. do it.
I had no words.
All I could think about were the times I had moved money from our "giving" column to our "need stuff" column. Hello. Gut Check. We always have more that we can give. more money, more time. So this is my vow. I am putting this in writing. No re do's. We can give more generously. We will.
And this is how I keep it real
